This year, United Nitro Funny Cars stepped-up the competition on the west coast by holding two Invitational drag races in the Pacific Northwest, This one at Spokane County Raceway (June 8th & 9th, 2017) and a second on July 7th & 8th, 2017 at Pacific Raceways in Kent, Washington. Legendary promoter Bill Doner heads the organization representing twenty NHRA Heritage-type nitro funny car owners. Oregonian Wally Giavia in his “G-Men” Dodge qualified second at 5.84, IHRA event winner Tim Boychuck’s “Happy Hour” Firebird third at 5.94, and the 2017 Good Vibrations March Meet winning “Pacemaker” Camaro of Canadian Ryan Hodgson fourth at 5.95.

Congratulations to UNFC member Ryan Hodgson and his "Pacemaker" Camaro crew and Crew Chief Bob Papirnick on their NHRA Heritage Series Nitro Funny Car Win over Bobby Cottrell in the Austin & O'Brien "Northwest Hitter" Camaro at this weekend's Nitro Shootout at RMR. (Aug. 25-26, 2017) Cottrell's 6.032 elapsed time nailed the #1 qualifier position and was Low ET of the event. Hodgson's consistancy and a final round 6.154/229.70 pass over Cottrell's redlight foul start handed Ryan the Wally and a slight Heritage Series nitro funny car points lead over Jason Rupert's "Rolling Thunder" Camaro going into the season-ending 26th California Hot Rod Reunion. Rupert went out in the first round to Mike Peck in the "California Hustler" Firebird. It was extremely hot and with adjusted altitude of as high as 8,100 feet it made for a difficult weekend for all the nitro funny car competitors!
Nitro finals under the stars! After blowing his motor friday night to breaking records saturday, Bobby Cottrell in Buckey Austin's Bardahl Funny Car dominated the field all day long and takes the win!
Unfortunately, the final round did not go as expected for Kris Krabell, his car had a pretty bad fire. Kris is ok and was able to walk away from this one, as he posted later on monday, "As I head out of Famoso, I want to thank everyone for the emails, calls, messages. If you drive these long enough, things like this will happen. Im ok, I took in alot of smoke, but all my safety equipment worked. I cant thank the Famoso crew enough for being right on me and putting the fire out. Im sick about the car, but it can be fixed. My team did an amazing job and I am so thankful for them. Love goes out to my wife and beautiful daughter for being my reason to keep fighting the fight. Again from the bottom of my heart, thanks to everyone for loving and caring."
Congratulations Bobby Cottrell, Bucky Austin, Mike OBrian, families and crew. 2017 NHRA California hot rod reunion champion! Bobby also won the 7.0 Second Pro 2017 Championship.
