Funny Car Fever

Nostalgia Funny Car

A big crowd, excellent racing, another United Nitro Funny Car win and two more UNFC track records. So it went at Pacific Raceways in Kent, Washington Friday night at the Good Guys Northwest National Drag Races. Under clear skies and near perfect conditions, the hometown team of Bucky Austin and driver Kris Krabill took home the CP Carrillo Trophy awarded the winning driver with the lowest elapsed time of the two-round nostalgia/heritage funny car competition. Krabill piloted Austin’s sleek ’78 Firebird Northwest Hitter to a track record 5.688 elapsed time in beating Tim Boychuk’s out of shape 17 second pass during the second round of racing at the Good Guys event. For the Krabill/Austin team it was sweet revenge after losing in the second round of last weekend’s Heritage race at Mission, British Columbia, Canada won by Boychuk. Further the Good Guys race was co-sponsored by Austin with most of the credit for its success going to son Dennis Austin and the Good Guys’ Jason Bunker. The Kent facility mile per hour record was also broken during the first round of racing by Edmonton’s Ryan Hodgson with a 251.11 top end  clocking in his ‘69 Camaro. The crowd was easily among the largest, if not THE largest, to ever witness a Good Guys event and seven of the fastest eight runs were posted by UNFC members including Canada’s Tim Nemeth (5.74), Hodgson (5.77), new member John Weaver (5.78), Boychuk (5.79) and Nathan Sitko (6.02).  UNFC member Wally Giavia had troubles on both passes and could only muster a 15.32 second elapsed time. UNFC member Dave Benjamin was also on hand testing his new car and recorded a 7.79 time.

Congratulations to UNFC member Kris Krabill and the Austin-O'Brien "Northwest Hitter" team on taking home the win (5.97) at RMR this weekend & clinching the 2016 NHRA Hot Rod Heritage Series Nostalgia Funny Car Championship!

In AA/Funny Car, Steven Densham won his second Nightfire crown by running 5.77, 248.39 in the final. The “Teacher’s Pet” held back the low qualifying “California Hustler” of Cory Lee who ran 5.88, 243.63.

MECHANICSVILLE, Md. (June 18, 2016) - The record-setting trend set on Friday continued Saturday at the IHRA President's Cup Nationals when UNFC Member Tim Boychuk in IHRA AMSOIL Nitro Funny Car took his win at Maryland International Raceway. Tim Boychuk became the third AMSOIL Nitro Funny Car winner in the season's first three races. He defeated Paul Romine, Steve Nichols and Mike McIntire, Jr

August 18, 2016 UNFC Newsletter by CEO, Bill Doner

Big news around the country last weekend as our Association members swept races from coast to coast.

At the IHRA Northern Nationals in Martin, Mich,. Jason Rupert set a new IHRA nitro funny car record with his 5.522 elapsed time in winning the finals and securing his third straight IHRA championship.  Rupert, of course, is the driver of the Rupert-Littlefield –Schwartz entry co-owned by UNFC board member Dave Schwartz.  Rupert also put up the IHRA speed mark with his 269 clocking at Edmonton Also at the Northern Nationals, UNFC members Frank and Debra Ousley’s Crop Duster driving by by Mark White qualified fourth with a 5.74 elapsed time.  White also used a hole shot to defeat John Hale in round one, but mechanical problems kept the Crop Duster from running in round two. Both Rupert and the Ousley team will be part of the giant California Hot Rod Reunion in Bakersfield on October 21-22-23.  Just for the record, there will be two qualifying runs on Friday and one on Saturday prior to the start of eliminations Saturday afternoon. Now in the West, the Boise Nightfire race was a huge success on all fronts according to all reports.  Stephan Densham in his father Gary’s Teacher’s Pet was the winner with a 5.77 final run to beat Cory Lee in Don Nelson’s California Hustler. Lee’s time was 5.88. The Hustler was the top qualifier with a 5.77 run following closely by six other UNFC members including  Densham (5.78). Tim Boychuk (5.81), Ryan Hodgson (5.82), Kris Krabill (5.86), Dan Horan (5.86) and Rich Townsend (6.06).  All these teams will be in Bakersfield. Densham’s win closed the gap in the Heritage series race to less than a two round lead for Krabill in Bucky Austin’s Northwest Hitter.

On another front, Krabill has put out word that he has rented the Bakersfield track for a 10 a.m,. to 5 p.m. testing session on Monday, October 17.  According to Krabill ,“space is limited” and any interest party should send him an email at We, United Nitro Funny Cars, will be holding an open meeting in Bakersfield on Thursday, October 20.  There will be, to say the very least, a lot to discuss including a complete rundown of my meeting with NHRA President Peter Clifford.  I will say this, I found Clifford to be a real gentleman and I see a bright future for our group working with both the IHRA and NHRA sanctioning bodies.I also had several meeting with IHRA President Mike Dunn in Edmonton.

Dan Horan -vs- Kris Krabill  at the 46th  NAPA Ignitor Funny Car Final Round,in Boise, ID.

and both are UNFC Members.

Congratulations to United Nitro Funny Cars member Tim Boychuk, Twig Ziegler, Dan Brochu and the entire Happy Hour Camaro crew for their awesome win at the Nitro Summer Nationals with a killer 5.621 elapsed time in the final round over Mr. Explosive Mark Sanders' Mustang tuned by Jake "the Snake" Sanders!

Following another record breaking qualifying session Friday,  June 10th, 2016, the heaven’s let loose and it rained virtually all day Saturday forcing the Heritage event to be rescheduled for August 27th.  But on the sunny side....UNFC members qualified one thru eight with Steven Densham again in the number one spot with a new track elapsed time record of 5.815.

Wow what a March Meet!

Sam continues to be rock solid in support of the group and is a valuable member of the board.
Thanks again for all who participated in awards or racing at the March Meet.
It was an absolutely super beginning to 2016.
